Hi! I was just wondering, do you think the three heads of the dragons have to BE dragons? Do they have to be Targaryens, or associated with dragons in some other way (i.e. wargs) or could it be anyone? I like the Dany/Jon/Tyrion theory, but I dislike Tyrion as secret Targaryen/Aerys' bastard son, and I was just wondering if the first one is possible without the second one. Sorry if this was answered before!

joannalannister:

GRRM said the third head of the dragon isn’t necessarily a Targaryen:

This third Targaryen might very well be -not- a Targaryen, to quote his exact words… “Three heads of the dragon… yes… but the third will not necessarily BE a Targaryen…”

I despise Lannisters-As-Secret-Targaryens theories more than anyone else on the entire internet (I checked), but I firmly believe that Dany, Jon, & Tyrion are the three heads of the dragon. I don’t think you have to be a Targaryen to bond with a dragon and become a dragonrider. Quoting Butterfly about what we know about dragonriders

“not all those who came forward in answer to the prince’s call were seeds, nor even the sons or grandsons of seeds.”
Netty, the bastard girl who tamed Sheepstealer, is described as “black-haired, brown-eyed, brown-skinned” — that is, with no significant Targaryen features. […]
Dragonriders typically use whips to control their dragons
"dragons bend easier to their rider’s will when full [of food]"
Dragonriders often wear a belt that’s chained to their mount’s saddle

There are also things like dragon horns to control dragons. I often wonder if Victarion’s horn will eventually (i.e. after Victarion dies) somehow help Tyrion control a dragon. Regarding warging, GRRM said:

Q: What can you tell us about a warg dragon rider?
A: There is no history/precedent for someone warging a dragon. There is a rich history of the mythical bond between dragon and rider.  There have been instances of dragons responding to their riders even from very far away which shows it is a true and very strong bond. We will learn more about this. Keep reading.

It’s possible that someone may skinchange into a dragon, but it isn’t necessary in order to ride one. I think the likely candidates for skinchanging into dragons are Jon or Bran

So yes, I definitely think the first one is possible without the second one. I talk about it in a lot more detail in my #endgame tag. I also strongly recommend Butterfly’s #the dragon must have three heads tag if you want to read more.
